Our company is committed to respect and maintain relationships with landowners, neighbours and stakeholders throughout the areas of forest that we work in.

PLANTING
In 2019, we planted approximately 2.1 million trees over 2,500 hectares. In 2020, we planted just under 3 million trees. Therefore, during planting season we recruit several casual employees depending on the workload. At Rai Silviculture, less experienced crew members, are trained by David Koubek (company director) or by a senior team member. Experienced workers will also get a re-introduction before every planting season. This ensures the consistent quality of planting to a high standard, which in turn maintains the stability of forest growth. Consequently, tree planting quality is checked daily before leaving the site after work to ensure planting standards are being met. This advances efficiency as well as upholds appropriate silvicultural treatment of the growing trees. Rai Silviculture provides adequate numbers of team members at every planting block to guarantee rapid but high-quality planting per hectare.

SPRAYING
Spraying takes place soon after planting. It is paramount to complete the
spraying immediately, depending on weather conditions, after the planting
season has been completed. This is important for Rai Silviculture as if too
much time lapses in between planting and spraying the job becomes harder
and more time consuming due to increased weed growth. Rai Silviculture has all the relevant gear for spraying, including mixing equipment, which has been maintained to a high standard and has proven to be effective.

THINNING
Thinning takes the longest time during the year, and typically happens from November to May or June. At Rai Silviculture, team members are closely supervised and a significant amount of time is spent on one-on-one training to improve the quality of work of individual team members. Training is conducted practically rather than verbally explaining how to improve the quality of work. This guarantees that Rai Silviculture’s method of thinning New Zealand’s forests will result in healthier trees. The thinning gear, except chainsaws, is provided by Rai Silviculture, to assure staff of good quality equipment. We support staff in acquiring chainsaws as this gives Rai Silviculture more confidence that chainsaws are maintained correctly. Maintenance plans and time is provided to keep
equipment at high standards. Every employee at Rai Silviculture completes Thinning to Waste certificates through NZQA, along with other forestry and health and safety units throughout the year.
